Pops Toasts Gershwin

The Boston Musical Intelligencer An intriguing all-Gershwin program introduced conductor David Charles to the Boston Pops on Wednesday, in the only Pops concert devoted to a single composer that I can remember. If “America’s orchestra” is going focus thus, it would be hard to beat Gershwin as the composer in the spotlight. Abell, an American-born conductor now living in London, has special experience in the musical theater, both in opera and musicals, and he works as a strong proponent of accurate musical editions of the great Broadway shows. As he discussed in an Intelligencer interview [here ], he has prepared a critical edition of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate, which he has conducted in two productions (the edition will be used for the dozen performances of Porter’s seditiously masterful take on Taming of the Shrew in this summer’s season of the Ohio Light Opera, in Wooster, Ohio). Abell’s stimulating variety of pieces represented pretty much the full range of Gershwin’s work: two overtures to Broadway shows (Girl Crazy and Of Thee I Sing), featured songs from those two shows, plus songs from other shows and from the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers film Shall We Dance, four selections from Porgy and Bess, Gershwin’s greatest masterpiece, and the score that really put him on the map, Rhasody in Blue. He invited three gifted soloists to join him, two of them singers: Nicole Cabell, 2005 winner of the BBC Singer of the World Competition in Cardiff, and Nmon Ford, a Panamanian-American baritone. Both have experience in opera in Europe and the United States in a wide range of roles; here they served both to bring the operatic heft and dramatic warmth required for the Porgy and Bess selections but also the lighter, sometimes comic, Broadway songs, though occasionally the lower vocal range of some parts of these songs meant that even with ample amplification, the lyrics occasionally lost the battle with the Boston Pops, which is larger by a considerable amount than any Broadway pit orchestra. I particularly liked how the conductor made a point of saying something about the orchestrators who took Gershwin’s piano scores for the theater songs and invented the colors heard in the theater. He noted the differences between theater scoring (where the pit orchestra was much smaller, around 29 players) and the versions on the Hollywood sound tracks, which could use a much larger orchestra. (For Porgy and Bess, Gershwin wrote the full score, including the complete orchestration, himself.) The substantial list of favorite numbers included (“Embraceable You,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “Of Thee I Sing,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Love Walked In” (the last song Gershwin composed before his tragically early death from a brain tumor), “Our Love is Here to Stay.” Youthful Charlie Albright, the solo pianist for the evening, graduated from the joint Harvard/NEC program (majoring in pre-med and economics as well as piano), before fo.llowing up with an Artist’s Diploma from Juilliard in 2014. He was interviewed by the Intelligencer earlier this week [here ]. A very accomplished improviser, he first appeared with a successful solo fantasy on the songs just performed by Cabell and Ford, before joining the orchestra for the charming “Promenade” from Shall We Dance, the number also known as “Walking the Dog. ” Returning at the end of the second half, he closed the official part of the concert with a vigorous, flexible, shapely and, shall we say, improvisatory take on Rhapsody in Blue. In addition to the large (and welcome) number of Gershwin standards, David Charles Abell brought us two largely unknown items. The first of these was a song, “I’ve Got to Be There,” from the short-lived 1933 show Pardon My English, richly sung and engagingly acted by Nmon Ford. The second novelty came in a posthumous tribute to Gershwin arranged by one of his most frequent orchestrators in the early 1940s, a few years after the composer’s death, under the title The Gershwin Nobody Knew. Robert Russell Bennett assembled a medley of lesser-known Gershwin tunes, including one that was simply drawn from Gershwin’s sketchbooks, never used in a show, and never given posthumous lyrics by brother Ira (something that happened to several tunes in that source). Abell talked about these songs and (during the performance) signaled to the audience when the completely unknown song without words appeared. He also wondered what more Gershwin might have composed if he had lived a normal lifespan. There was a whisper of amazement in the audience making it clear that a substantial percentage of those present had had no idea that Gershwin’s early death puts him in the category of geniuses cut off in their primes. Audience response at the end of the concert, which can fairly be described as “wildly enthusiastic,” brought a final number as an encore: the main hit from Of Thee I Sing. Before giving the downbeat, the conductor pointed out that the show had opened on the eve of a presidential election year, December 26, 1931. As currently, the political parties’ violent opposition rendered the voters seriously disgruntled. The only campaign platform that promised success was simply, “Love,” and that motivated the show’s biggest tune, “Love Is Sweeping the Country,” which was performed by the two vocal soloists as heard in the original show, followed by a stanza with new lyrics by Bill Rosenfield referencing the current campaign. From the colorful lighting and bubbly at the tables to the lively engagement of the swinging musicians, the whole evening rang with brilliance, energy, occasional poignancy, and frequent high spirits that characterize Gershwin and his work. David Charles Abell can clearly bring these qualities out, especially with the Boston Pops, which has the Gershwin style down pat. All around, a well-planned survey and a splendid tribute. Steven Ledbetter is a free-lance writer and lecturer on music. He got his BA from Pomona College and PhD from NYU in Musicology. He taught at Dartmouth College in the 1970s, then became program annotator at the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1997. The Well-Tempered Ear

May 20

Classical music: On June 13, the Rural Musicians Forum will kick off its summer season series of FREE concerts at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin compound in Spring Green.

By Jacob Stockinger The Ear is passing along the following announcement in time for you to mark your datebook and make plans: For the 2016 summer season, the Rural Musicians Forum welcomes audiences to Taliesin, the historic estate of Frank Lloyd Wright , near Spring Green , and to the Wright-designed Wyoming Valley Cultural Arts Center. In commenting on the venues for the series, RMF’s artistic director Kent Mayfield (below) said: “RMF is honored to work in close collaboration with Taliesin Preservation Inc. to host much of this year’s series at the Taliesin’s Hillside School Theater. The Hillside Theater (below) provides a dramatic but intimate setting for performances totally consistent with Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision: imaginative, bold and beautiful. And, for its part, the Wyoming Valley Cultural Arts Center underscores the sustained vitality of that vision.” Madison’s acclaimed harpsichordist, fortepianist , pianist and founder of the Madison Bach Musicians, Trevor Stephenson (below top) opens the 2016 season on June 13 with mezzo-soprano Margaret Fox (below bottom). Violinist Alexander Ayers (below) follows on June 27. Ayers, earlier a player in the Madison Symphony and now a member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra , has been widely praised for his shimmering virtuosity and technical precision. (You can hear him perform the virtuosic Caprice No. 11 for solo violin by Niccolo Paganini in the YouTube video at the bottom.) July 11 brings on the memorable trio of Dan Barker (piano), Rob Shepherd (saxophone) and Cleo Ware (vocals) for an evening of glorious, nostalgic music by George Gershwin (below). Clocks in Motion (below) brings its adventurous and absolutely contemporary percussion repertoire to Taliesin on July 25. That will be followed on Aug. 8, by a showcase of captivating new music by the Madison-based wind quintet, Black Marigold (below). The season closes with RMF’s annual “Music in the Fields,” on Sunday, Aug. 21. The Stellanova’s evening of café jazz promises equal parts Hawaiian luau, Parisian wedding and mellow summer pleasure on the lawn at the Wyoming Valley Cultural Arts Center. The center is located at 6306 State Highway 23. (This event is ticketed.) Now in its 35th season, RMF continues to provide all members of the community an opportunity to enjoy live music featuring a wide range of styles and combinations of music with performers of extraordinary ability. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. There is no ticket charge for concerts at Hillside Theater, but a freewill offering to support the series is taken. Given the unique appeal of the Taliesin location, early arrival for the concerts is recommended. NOTE: Sorry, but The Ear has received no word about specific programs an works to be performed. He also doesn’t see them listed on the website for the Rural Musicians Forum. Full information on specific concerts is available at www.ruralmusiciansforum.org or at ruralmusiciansforuum@yahoo.com . Sometime Local Pianist Makes Pops His Thing

Harvard, NEC, and Gardner Museum concertgoers may be used to thinking of pianist Charlie Albright as one of our own, and at that, a mostly serious sort of young musician. It turns out he is out in the world now, currently touring with pops orchestras. BMInt spoke with him recently on the road in the Deep South, prior to his homecoming Boston Pops Gershwin appearance Wednesday and Thursday nights in Rhapsody in Blue. The concerts will also feature more Gershwin with noted singers Nicole Cabell and Nmon Ford. More details here . A companion interview with conductor Daniel Charles Abell is here . FLE: Your bio has you studying and playing the piano since you were three. Do you have any recollections of not playing? CA: Not really. When you have a distant memory, sometimes you’re unsure if it’s a real memory or something that your mind fabricated to go along with the story. I don’t remember not playing the piano is the best way to put it, but I remember when I was three we had a little broken upright, really, really dinky and rundown. My mom is Korean, but my dad is a little bit ‘everything Caucasian’, from Akron Ohio. Mom had grown up in Korea where everyone plays a little piano or violin. Everyone just learns it when they’re a kid and so she knew enough that when we had this rickety upright I climbed up and started pecking out “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and she was in the kitchen or something, and she came in and asked me where I learned it, and I said I had just heard it somewhere. So she started me with neighborhood teachers, then with the old lady who lived a block down the road in my small town, who played the accordion and the organ and piano. I had several like that and one of the biggest teachers growing up was a lady who owned a little piano and organ store in this little rundown dying mall-type area. For years my dad and my mom would take me and the teacher would teach me oldies and we’d switch back and forth and improvise and all kinds of stuff between organs and pianos. I played by ear basically. I didn’t learn how to read music at all. And then I was taking lessons from a jazz teacher in Olympia when I was about 6 or 7, and he recommended a classical teacher, saying I needed to have about a year’s worth of classical training to develop technique, skills for fun songs. And so I started with Mrs. Adsit, who is an amazing teacher and classically trained and oriented. So I had to learn to play what was on the written page and interpret things properly, and I didn’t stop. I was with her up until I went off to Harvard. Wow So I went to her for about 12 years. She no longer lives in Olympia; she’s now in Michigan, where she grew up, but I’m so excited, she’s coming to the concerts next week. It’ll be the first time I’ve seen her in about a year; I get out to Michigan occasionally. You seem to be as omnivorous about education as you are about the keyboard. After the NEC / Harvard joint program, you got an AD from Juilliard. Are you going to be a lifelong student? When I was finishing up high school, I had to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, right? At least point the needle in some direction. And my parents aren’t wealthy at all: my dad’s retired from the Navy; my mom she works as a student supervisor in the local community college library; both parents have associate degrees and that’s it. I had to figure out what do I want to do with my life. Obviously I love piano and music and at that point I was performing more and more and starting to get out of the Northwest. I was performing in New York and the Northeast a bit more often, so I was traveling for music and loved it but also had to figure out how am I going to pay for college and what exactly do I want to do. To boot, my dad has a chronic disease, one of those really freak-of-nature ones, called reflex sympathetic dystrophy, RSD, basically a neurological disease, and he’s in pain all the time and they don’t really know why and there’s no cure. Anyway, I thought, if I can’t do music—music is a lot of practice and stuff, but a lot more of it is luck, God’s blessing, being in the right place at the right time, things that are out of your control—if music wasn’t an option, medicine was always an interest. So I thought about joint programs and applied to a whole bunch of them and it turned out that Harvard and NEC was the best match because, one, it was free; two, they’re both good schools. It worked out well. So I went there and my concentration at Harvard was economics but I did premed, and kept doing music the whole time. During college I performed more and more; eventually it got to the point where I was gone every week, roughly. And most weekends I would be away and then come back to school on the weekdays and go to class and then email in homework. Nearing the end, people were always asking me, what are you going to do when this is over? I interned on Wall Street and all the stuff that they do, and I realized that medicine and business, finance, they were interests, sure. Finance is a quicker way to make money. But music was a passion, and I realized there’s a world of difference between something you’re interested in and something that you’re really passionate about. So I knew I had to do music, and applied to artist diploma programs, and moved to New York, into Julliard, and here I am. So you don’t have plans to go back to medical school or business school? Correct. But it was a long process coming and I think I knew the answer deep inside for longer than I let on; I’m one of those people who put off having to make a decision until I absolutely have to, even though I know what the decision will be. How did you do in organic chemistry and cell biology? All right. I took most of the premed, but if I want to go to med school I think I have orgo left. I took all the other stuff. But I did all right. * * * We been hearing you a lot at the Gardner in serious repertoire. How did this gig with the Pops come about? When I was finishing up at Harvard, they asked me to play the Grande Tarantelle by Gottschalk. Have you ever heard it? I know it: I’m from New Orleans and he’s a famous name down there. We did it at a couple of concerts in May 2011 with Keith Lockhart and that was a lot of fun. Lockhart is also the MD at the BBC Concert Orchestra in England and they were coming to the States to do this 14-concert tour up the East Coast, and they asked me to play; this was last year. We started in South Carolina and then all the way through Florida and as high as Purchase NY. And we also played Shostakovich 2 and the Ravel G Major concertos. So I got to know him well and when they were planning their music they asked me to play Rhapsody in Blue a few times. So on May 1, the Pops came to Purchase and we gave a concert there, and this time it’ll be Symphony Hall. It’s one of the concertos I’ve had longest. I remember playing it in high school. I love it, an awesome piece, so fun to play Does your love of improvisation play into it? If you listen to the piano roll that Gershwin made himself, he’s not playing exactly what’s written in some places. Exactly; I do take a lot of liberties, and it’s a lot of fun because there’re so few rules. You can’t break out into singing when you’re doing Mozart, but in Rhapsody in Blue you totally can, so there are lots of parts where I change up the rhythms and do things that aren’t really written down. The score is pretty straightforward (singing), but when you play it you can turn it into complete jazz. A swing, yeah. A few months ago I played it with the California Symphony out near San Francisco. The music director is Gianato Cabrera, great guy, and we the original jazz band version. The Paul Whiteman version. Yes, so cool, and actually different. There’s an added measure or two here and there. The notes are the same but the way you have to play some of them is different because the orchestra plays with you, and that doesn’t happen in the orchestral version. I think like the second or third page right after the piano makes its first entrance, there’s a part where the band is playing along with the piano in parallel, so you can’t take as much liberty as you might otherwise. A lot of fun. You have a whole saxophone section and you have just one violin and one viola. It’s crazy. I learned it when I was working with Mrs. Adsit still back in Washington State, and when I first learned it I played it fairly regularly, and I think I may have worked on it with Miss Byun at NEC. Did you ever play for Russell Sherman? I did. I haven’t in a while now, because I’ve been away for a few years, but when I was in Boston my weekly lesson would be with Miss Byun. Occasionally when I’m working on something that he specializes in, like a late Beethoven sonata, I would go have a master lesson with him. Of course he loves Gershwin too. Oh yeah, oh yeah, he’s amazing, what an incredible artist. * * * You like to talk to audiences. Was that something you were encouraged to do by teachers? I don’t think any teachers encouraged or discouraged me from doing it, but it’s something I really enjoy doing. I worked with Yo-Yo Ma a few times, and he is so open, verbally as well as artistically. He’d be so open to talking to people. If you hear him perform often, it’s not super formal. I saw that certain people were doing it, and the responses from the audiences, not only people who are not necessarily classical aficionados but also people who are; the responses were always generally very good, because I think it lowers this artificial wall between an audience and a performer. Speaking to an audience really helps me connect with them. Psychologically it helps me just as much, and I’ve gotten lot of amazing responses saying that not only it makes it more personable but I know what to listen for and it makes the whole experience more human, more natural and less artificial. And so I started doing that and really have enjoyed it. If you had been invited to address the Symphony Hall audience before Rhapsody in Blue, what do you think you’d talk about? Oh! Well, it’s a piece that is Americana at its finest, right? You can argue this is the most American of compositions. Everyone knows it even if they have no clue about jazz or classical or anything. It’s a dialogue between the performer and the orchestra and the audience, and it’s so free that you can really just let it go. That’s the real point of the music. It’s all of these crunchy chords and all of these wonderful—it’s freedom. And so that’s Americana at its finest. Do you wish you could play between the notes like the clarinetist does? (laughs) No, I don’t know how good that would sound on the piano. I could start playing two at a time and emulate, and psychologically it would sound that way. But yeah I’m looking for it. I’m in Alabama right now. I’m doing Mozart C Major, tonight and tomorrow, and then I’m up to New York on Sunday, I think. Looking forward to it. I mean the whole program is Gershwin and I think Maestro Abell and I are planning some extra fun things in the concert as well. I look forward to it; look for me quietly drinking bubbly at one of the tables. And you’re such an old pro now that you probably don’t need me to tell you to break a leg. For some pieces, no matter how old you are or how many decades you’ve played them, you still need a little bit of luck! Pops Time and the Listening Is Easy

Conductor Daniel Charles Abell Conductor David Charles Abell makes his Boston Pops debut in Wednesday’s and Thursday’s Gershwin Celebration, where he will be joined by singers Nicole Cabell, Nmon Ford in the songs “Summertime,” “ It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “ Bess You Is My Woman Now,” and “Embraceable You.” Pianist Charlie Albright will bring his improvisatory style to Rhapsody in Blue. The American-born British resident Abell is active in symphonic music, opera and musical theater. Known for his television appearances worldwide as conductor of the Les Misérables Anniversary concerts, he is recognized as an authoritative interpreter of the musicals of Stephen Sondheim. He talked recently with BMInt. FLE: As a music theater person, who sensitive are you to the style of the original composers, the style of the period. So many presenters just work in the current style of the day. Do you have strong feelings about period style and what do you about it? A: Well as it happens I do and I could go into huge detail on this if you wanted. Well I really am interested… Let me give you a sort of a quick precis of what I think that we’re doing because it’s actually quite relevant to the concert that we’re doing next week. The Boston Pops has a great history of arrangers and we’re doing two, well several of, we’re actually using two of the arrangers from the Boston Pops stable. So Leroy Anderson, we’re going to open with his medley from Girl Crazy which is a tried and true medley that Arthur Fiedler conducted and it’s been done a lot at the Boston Pops and we’re doing two arrangements, song arrangements by Don Sebesky who’s a wonderful modern arranger, who I think grew up in the ‘60s and ‘70s and has that jazz tradition, that sort of modern-ish jazz tradition and he’s done something very clever in his arrangement of Love Walked In which in his counterpoint in his theme which is the slow theme to Rhapsody in Blue with the tune to Love Walked In. So it’s quite wonderful. But all the other songs that we’re doing will be the original theater or Hollywood arrangements and for this concert I have, with my partner Sean Alderking who I’ve worked with very often, done a lot of restoration work on, well as far as what we can tell, are the originals and it’s tricky because orchestra scores and parts were considered disposable in the 1930s. They were traded like sets of copies. So after the original production was finished on Broadway the producers quite often threw them out! Just out with the garbage. There was no further use for them so many of them do not survive. And for each show the situation is different. Some of our publishers have, which, may or may not have the original, some maybe original, some may not be. Scores have been created from those parts and Sean and I have gone through and edited them tried to identify what looks stylistically right and what definitely isn’t because sometimes you have the trombone doubling the oboe all the way through [laughter] and you know that you probably got a trombone from a touring orchestration and an oboe part from the Broadway orchestration. You know, probably on the road they had to cut the oboe so that’s actually not a very good example. But let’s say…So, for a song like Embraceable You for instance, is one of Gershwin’s most famous songs, it’s been recorded hundreds of time by all sorts of wonderful artists and all those recordings were new orchestrations done for the artist you know when Ella Fitzgerald did it, she had her arranger lower the key and slow down the tempo and it became a torch song but actually in Girl Crazy it was a medium tempo number which had a dance break in the middle. And we have a set of rental parts which we put into a score and looked at them altogether and thought well this bit looks like Robert Russell Bennett and this bit doesn’t and then I read somewhere that Glen Miller might have done some of the orchestration of Embraceable You. He was in the band, there was this incredible orchestra, the Red Nichols orchestra which had Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller and a couple of other incredible people who just became superstars after that, in the band. So whatever parts they played off of seemed to be lost. The original orchestrators score whether it was Robert Russell Bennett or Glen Miller those are lost too as far as we can tell. So, what we have to go by are these parts from the publisher. There are no original conductor scores? Well, conductors didn’t conduct off of scores at that point. Some well…we finished about two years ago editing a critical edition of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate and we tried to apply the same musicological standards to that show as say the New Mozart edition which was done in Germany starting in the 1950s. And it’s only the second Broadway show to actually be available in a critical edition. But we wanted to set the bar high and sort of make an example for the rest of Broadway because it’s very hard to do Broadway repertoire in its original orchestrations. Well there are economic issues there too aren’t there? In terms of, orchestras for some musicals are much smaller now. Yes. Kiss Me Kate originally had a 29-piece orchestra and probably will never been done on Broadway again with that many players, but since we published the critical edition the proms here in London have done it live telecast and radio broadcast and I’ve conducted two productions, one at Opera North in England and one at the Châtelet in Paris of Kiss Me Kate and I’m not sure those productions would have happened if we hadn’t published the score. I think it’s going to open up the original version of Kiss Me Kate for instance to opera companies and symphony orchestras who hopefully will want to do it. When it gets on Broadway and other theater companies they may want to do the 1999 orchestration, which is smaller, but it’s not the original. You know, if you want the original sound you have to have the original orchestration. And I should add here that nine of the songs will be done in their original Broadway or Hollywood orchestration. But if you just use what you get from the publishers, you’re taking a horrible risk, because there are no really authentic and accurate orchestral scores for any of these songs. So when I do this repertoire, I tend to creat the parts myself. Well who did the original orchestration of Kiss Me Kate? It wasn’t Cole Porter himself was it? No, the original orchestrations for Kiss Me Kate were done by Robert Russell Bennett and Don Walker. About 50% maybe 65-70% Walker did 30 or so and a couple of other people involved in a small way. So what is the role of the Gershwin estate in all of these morphing editions? That’s very interesting. They announced a couple of years ago that they were going to fund a complete edition of Gershwin’s works with the University of Michigan, and they will be bringing out Rhapsody in Blue fairly soon in the three different versions of which Gershwin approved. Grofé actually the versionis for Jazz band, stock, and large symphony orchestra; we are doing the latter with pops. And does the Paul Whitman version still exist in accurate form? You can hear a rendition 1:20 into this excerpt from King of Jazz (1930) The film has just gotten a major restoration which is not evident in the clip below. Yes it does—you can still do it. And I have been in touch with the estate about possibly doing some work for them, but I’m a little concerned about the sources…whether the material adequate to do complete scholarly versions exists. The Hollywood works survive better. We have complete scores of the songs we are doing on this program, but the Broadway works are much more problematical. Okay so let’s assume that you’ve successfully created the Urtext for the orchestra to play from. What about the performance style? That’s so different now. No! It’s really not so hard actually. Anyone who’s heard swing music can do “Too Darn Hot.” Basically, you need a talented jazz trumpet player and a good guitarist and a pianist who knows the style and a drummer who knows the style but Bennett in particular, well maybe Walker as well were what you call a legit orchestrators. They had five reed players all of whom played saxophone and all of whom doubled on other woodwind instruments. So flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, bassoon and clarinet all figure in various shapes and sizes. They could call on a large palette. Having done it in England and France, I haven’t found it to be too much of a problem. I occasionally have to tell them where to swing and where not to swing and a few other details. This is my first time working with Boston Pops, but I’m sure the most famous pops orchestra in the world knows its styles. And what about the singers? The modern Broadway vocalist with a microphone is very different beast than Ethel Merman. Very true. You have to be careful whom you cast, but if you get the casting right you’ll probably get the style right. Do you ever do un-amplified musicals? I did Fiddler on the Roof last summer un-amplified in the 500-seat Grange Park Theater in the UK. The orchestration done by Don Walker about 20 years after Kiss Me works un-amplified because he was the kind of orchestrator that didn’t rely on the microphones to get the singers over the band. He knew when to get out of the way. And of course the orchestra must have been in a pit in that theater… Yes, and Broadway theater pits tend to be very covered which makes it even easier. But still Broadway is now all miked and it’s really kind of a shame. Yeah, I know, it is! …and the singers croon rather than project. Yeah, yeah. So presumably at Pops it’s going to be miked because that’s the style. Actually we’re using two highly renowned opera singers, Nicole Cabell and Nmon Ford for the four excerpts from Porgy and Bess, and I’m positive they will be able to do the Hollywood songs and American songs as well, because Americans have them in their blood. Will they be miked for Porgy and Bess as well as the songs? We haven’t thought about taking the mics off the opera, but I think we’ll have to leave them on, because we’re starting with three Broadway songs before we move on to the Porgy. To take the mics off would feel strange to the audience. Can you tell us how you came to be invited to make you pops debut with this concert? I was conducting Christmas concerts at the Philly Pops for three years, and those events are huge. We have a full symphony orchestra plus a 150-voice adult choir, a 50-voice boy choir, a 50-vooce Gospel choir, an organist, soloists and Santa Claus. [Pops executive director] Dennis Alves came down in 2014 and saw one of the concerts and then invited me to do this. I’m absolutely thrilled to be doing it. The Boston Pops is the pinnacle. Charlie Albright (file photo) Do you have any favorite singers and pianists from the past for this repertoire? I’d rather talk about Charlie Albright, the soloist for the Rhapsody. And we have a couple of tricks up our sleeves. Charlie is quite a force of nature. At the age of three, he started improvising on the piano, and he didn’t learn to read music until he was nine or ten. So the whole beginning of his musical development was by ear., and having to be creative at the piano… We’re going to unleash him at one point in one of the songs. And of course Gershwin and other pianists have improvised in the Rhapsody. Charlie told us in the companion interview that he would be improvising in spots. Did he tell you that he was going to improvise in the Rhapsody? He hasn’t told me yet! [laughter] Well I’ll just have to be ready! He will be accompanying some of the songs as well? He might be doing a bit of improv in the songs, but I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprises with Charlie. Gershwin Celebration at Pops May 18 and 19 Tickets and details here. George Gershwin
(1898 – 1937)

George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. He wrote most of his vocal and theatrical works, including more than a dozen Broadway shows, in collaboration with his elder brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin. George Gershwin composed music for both Broadway and the classical concert hall, as well as popular songs that brought his work to an even wider public. His compositions have been used in numerous films and on television, and many became jazz standards recorded in numerous variations. Countless singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin songs.
